.WHAT RACE ARE YOU RUNNING?RUNNING THE RACE OF ADVENTURE

Travel evokes a place of where one would go. Together with this, adventure travel evokes a purpose of why one would go too, with a probability of no idea where exactly. This Tale is difficult to write as we do not have it all figured out.

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.” – Hebrews 11:8-9

Our starting point of Africa Calling at Cape Agulhas, meaning Cape of Needles at 20 degrees longitude, is where the compass needles of the ships swung in various directions as they passed the most southerly point of the African continent and the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Any direction is possible! In antiquity, it was discovered that it was here where true north and magnetic north coincided, and the result has been the collision of many vessels and this rugged coastline which is littered with their wrecks.

Starting and finishing at the Meisho Maru 38 shipwreck (1982), the Rasperpunt Hiking Trail is so named after a jagged point of rocks which resemble that of a rasp.

We all reach a point where we may feel we have hit rock bottom, directionless or worse still, ship wrecked. This is not something unusual, rather a unique opportunity…

Adventure travel is more challenging than usual travel as one’s ‘internal’ compass has no particular bearing, or if it does, we have to remind ourselves of it and remain in it, even though we have no idea where we will end up.

“Abide in me, and I (Jesus) in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:4-5 [brackets added]

The journey in what we do is what it is about – the difficult lessons, taking one day at a time in being alert to changes around us and responding accordingly. We like to call this obedience – the safest Rock to be stranded on.

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” Luke 6:46-49

The Cape Agulhas lighthouse is the second oldest operational lighthouse in South Africa – a necessity for where two oceans meet. Lighthouses assist vessels avoid a wreckage by its guiding light.

We are all running a race however we define it. How is your race guided? Do you have guiding Light?
